Organic food is the food produced by following  organic farming practices  . It is increasingly popular in Europe and the United States, especially among parents who are concerned about the adverse effect of  synthetic fertilizers and chemicals on the health of  their children in the long term.

Most of  the organic food produced locally consists of  vegetables and fruits , which are grown by small farmers. Earlier fresh organic produce  was sold directly by the farmers to the customers at the local market . However, with the demand for organic food products exceeding supply, many supermarkets have started stocking organic fruits, vegetables and other grocery items. This food usually is certified as organic by the relevant government agency for the area, if  the amount of  synthetic chemicals is less than the acceptable minimum.

In addition to being eco friendly,  some studies have found that organic food  has more nutrients compared to conventionally cultivated food .

Organic farming is a  method of  cultivation of  crops in which the use of  synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, genetically modified seeds, plant growth regulators and feed additives is minimized or completely eliminated. Though the crop yields for organic farming are lower than conventional methods, the food produced is eco friendly and less likely to affect the health of a consumer in the long term.

With the increased demand for organic food in North America , Europe, Japan and Australia, the number of  farmers using organic agricultural practices has increased in these countries. However,  in many remote and tribal areas , especially in the tropical regions, fertilizers, pesticides and other artificial products are not available, so the food produced is organic by default.

In general organic farming practices will reduce soil erosion / depletion , rotate a number of crops  instead of  a single crop and farm animals are allowed to graze outdoors .
